This auction listing is for: *Item: MATTEL 1970s SUN SET ELI (package dated 1966 Mattel) *Condition: NEVER REMOVED FROM BOX / Mint in Box . This UNBELIEVABLY RARE (most likely the ONLY NRFB example in existance) vintage Asian ELI was sold only in Korea. Collectors of rare vintage Barbie dolls may have heard of the Japanese Eli, produced as Living Eli and Sun Sun Eli--those dolls have been well documented in books and magazine articles, but Eli was also available briefly in another Asian nation, Korea! With her side-parted dark brunette hair, large head, brown eyes, and shoulder-length hair, this Korean Eli looks very much like her Japanese versions. This Korean Eli invited comparisons to Sun Sun Eli because of her bubble card package, which looks VERY similar to the Sun Set (and Sun Sun) Malibu packaging introduced in 1971 (the top half of the card is dark orange, while the lower half of the card is white and features photos of three dolls--the only difference being that on the Sun Set package, the dolls pictured are Malibu Barbie, Malibu Francie, and Malibu Skipper, while this Korean package shows ELI in all three photos modeling different fashions! This Korean Eli is most definitely a Mattel Barbie doll--while the card is written mostly in Korean, the words "MADE UNDER LICENSE FROM MATTEL INC. USA. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED c 1966" is printed in the lower right corner of her card, establishing this as a genuine Mattel doll. Eli has the "Mexico" style Barbie arms on the regular Barbie body (this is not the Living Eli body). The history of this doll is as follows: in the 1970s a businessman traveling to Korea purchased two dolls for his wife, a Barbie and this Eli. Both of these unique dolls were sold on bubble packaging and bear the deer logo of the licensee who acquired the rights from Mattel to manufacture Barbie. The Barbie doll used the Twist 'N Turn Barbie head mold and was dressed as Wonder Woman (that doll may be seen in the books Barbie Doll Around the World and on page 333 Collector's Encyclopedia of Barbie Doll Collector's Editions 2008) and sold at auction for $2,500 and now resides in an East coast museum). Like the Wonder Woman Barbie, Eli is wearing a simple but colorful costume; her shoes are inside the Mattel bag behind the doll. Her package looks great--the bubble is firmly sealed to the card with no lifting, and there are no bubble dents visible--only minor wrinkling in the card. This Eli is deserving of the FINEST collection--a RARE beauty indeed--a doll worthy of a museum!
